                                                          ARTIST STATEMENT

My approach to impasto palette knife oil painting evokes the essence of the artistic image with a painterly style. Using vibrant color and nature's inspiration, my paintings come alive with the movement of wave and wind, the excitement of sunset skies and waterfront landscape. All of my paintings contain a marine theme whether they are "marine abstract” or marine landscape. My emphasis is on color and on the paint itself as well as on the images of the sea. Major influences on my work are Monet, Bonnard, Matisse and the Fauvist painters, Winslow Homer and the color field paintings of Rothko and Stills. I try to convey their sense of artistic freedom and use of color in my paintings. I mix my paint on the canvas itself letting the primary colors dominate in a low relief effect. While I maintain a representational focus, my large moving sea images, painted with a palette knife become abstract as I focus on only a small portion of the sea to fill my canvas.
